Cliche

I get the feeling that defining my year by the recipes we use would be terribly cliche. I know for a fact that it would, actually, or at least I would feel like it was. . . but with cooking a family-style meal almost every night, I guess that it would be rather fitting.

I grew up eating at home almost every night with the family around the table. Mum did it for a number of reasons - I suspect they're the same as mine. It's practical; with everyone eating the same thing for dinner and the ingredients being rather cheap, you can get some stunning varieties for relatively little. It promotes fellowship - not really much of a choice in a family, but here we have to be a little more intentional about it. It keeps everyone in touch, even if the conversation is completely vapid.

It reminds me of home.

We are ridiculously busy here from week to week and on top of it all we're expected to live in this thing they call 'intentional community.' If we were unintentional about it we would still have Monday's together by virtue of the program. I think this is better though. I guess in a lot of ways what we eat is defining a big part of my year. However horribly cliche it sounds, food does bring us together.

Tonight's Recipe: Shepherd's Pie

Left-over chili, thawed
1 lb. ground beef thawed
left-over mashed potatoes
more mashed potatoes because we need to use the potatoes before break
a can of corn
cheese

Directions:
Spend two hours talking to the guys about what we want to do today since we really haven't left the house. Realize that nobody has a plan or a particular desire to go out and decide to save the money. Spend another indeterminate amount of time talking about random musings and decide that whatever happens we need food. Get frustrated with the pace of things and decide to make something. Start looking through the fridge until something makes sense. Pour chili, drained corn, and ground beef into an oblong baking dish and stir it around. Top with mashed potatoes and cheese and send runners to the grocery store when it's not raining so hard. Ring the dinner bell when everyone gets home. Eat.
